Confirmed as probable for the 1 1/8-mile event is Four Roses Thoroughbreds’ Anak Nakal, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) in his last start at Churchill Downs Nov. 24. The Victory Gallop colt has been pointing toward this race, which will be his fourth career start. He last worked six furlongs at Palm Meadows in 1:14.40.
Listed as possible are the other Zito trainees owned by Robert LaPenta – Cool Coal Man, winner of a Jan. 26 allowance event, Coal Play, sixth in the Feb. 2 Swale Stakes (gr. II), and 2-year-old champion War Pass, who has not raced since his Oct. 27 Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) win. War Pass is expected to make his 3-year-old debut at Gulfstream the weekend of the 24th, but will likely start in an allowance race rather than taking the stake route.
War Pass last worked four furlongs at Palm Meadows in :47.60 Feb. 9, while Cool Coal Man went the same distance Feb. 8 in :50 flat. Coal Play has not worked since his effort in the Swale.
Bill Mott trainee Court Vision, winner of Aqueduct’s Nov. 24 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) for WinStar Farm, is a likely starter. His last work came Feb. 6 over the Payson Park surface, when he went five furlongs in 1:02.20. Starlight Stables’ Monba and Marty Wolfson trainee Golden Spikes may start as well. Monba, trained by Todd Pletcher, worked six furlongs in 1:14.30 Feb. 11. Golden Spikes, owned by M375 Thoroughbreds and Suarez Racing Stable, last worked four furlongs in :48.60 at Calder Race Course Feb. 9.
Also confirmed as probable by the Gulfstream Park press office was Robert S. Evans’ Elysium Fields (in training with Barclay Tagg) and Padua Stable’s newly purchased Face The Cat, recently transferred from the hands of Helen Pitts to Pletcher’s stable. Elyium Fields worked Feb. 11 at Gulfstream, going six furlongs in 1:13. Face The Cat's last work was recorded Feb. 11 at Gulfstream as well, when the Tale of the Cat colt went four furlongs in :50 flat.
