Santa Anita, which is scheduled to conduct this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships Oct. 24-25, could be selected as the site of the event again in 2009 when the Breeders' Cup board meets today, Thursday, Feb. 7.

"I think we're the leading candidate," Allen Gutterman, the track's vice president of marketing, told the Los Angeles Times.

Sherwood Chillingworth, executive vice president and director of the Oak Tree Racing Association, also expressed optimism in getting the bid.

"This year, we'll host the first Breeders' Cup to be run on a synthetic track," he said, "and next year we'd be the first to host back-to-back Breeders' Cups."

Santa Anita is in the process of renovating its Cushion Track artificial racing surface that has led to cancellation of eight days of racing during this inaugural season of use.

The Breeders' Cup has been held at Santa Anita three times -- 2003 (51,648 attendance; $16.3 million on-track handle; $120.6 million total handle); 1993 (55,130 attendance; $15 million on-track handle; $82.6 million total handle); 1986 (69,155 attendance; $15.4 million on-track handle; $34.9 million total handle).
