New Vocations adoption program reported that it placed more than 300 retired race horses in new homes last year.

“A market flooded with unwanted horses and drought throughout much of the lower Midwest and Southeast has made it a lot more difficult to find quality homes that are willing to adopt,” said Dot Morgan, New Vocations executive director. “Adoption fees average $225, and many of the horses are given away. We keep our adoption fees very low in order to encourage qualified people to step up and help with this mission.” 
 
New Vocations adopts retired Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds throughout the central and eastern United States. The horses are rehabilitated, socialized, and professionally evaluated for temperament, soundness, and suitability. Potential adopters must complete a thorough adoption process to be approved for ownership.
