Michael Walker won New Zealand's jockey championship at age 16. Now a much older and wiser 17, Walker recently matched and will soon eclipse the country's record for most wins in a year. Walker matched Lance O'Sullivan's 162 wins on May 24, and did it with five wins on the day's card at Hastings.
There is no sign of Walker slowing down. He was scheduled on five mounts at the Marton Jockey Club's Awapuni meeting on May 26, and already has rides on the books the May 27 races at Paeroa.
Walker's agent, Allan Sharrock, told the Wellington
Dominion the goal for the year is 180. That should be attainable with 10 weeks left in the racing season. Sharrock said the tough part might be keeping Walker at home--he mentioned the jockey has had interest from Singapore and performed well in Macau.
