With two wins at Churchill Downs on Thursday, jockey Pat Day moved closer to career win number 8,000 -- a level reached by only two other riders in history.

Day, Churchill's all-time leading rider, posted victories number   7,989 and 7,990 with wins aboard About Respect in the fifth race and Catamaran in the tenth.

Day ranks third in career victories, following all-time leader Laffit Pincay, Jr., with 9,147 victories (through Wednesday) and the retired Bill Shoemaker, who has 8,833 wins.

Day remains at Churchill through Sunday, and he will ride Mike Pegram's Love At Noon in Saturday's $100,000-added Dogwood (gr. III).

On the Memorial Day card at Belmont Park on Monday, Day will ride Oaklawn Handicap (gr. I) winner Traditionally in the Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I).
