Louisiana stallion Lake Austin died in December at age 10 from colic. The son of Storm Cat resided at Don Ackel's Ackel Thoroughbred Farm near Sulphur, La.

Lake Austin sired stakes winners Capt. Joe Blow and Piratesonthelake, both of whom were multiple stakes winners in 2007, plus two stakes-placed runners. Piratesonthelake won last year's Kentucky Cup Sprint Stakes (gr. III) and Arlington Sprint Handicap.

Lake Austin was the first foal from the grade I-winning Seattle Slew mare Lakeway. Bred by Mike G. Rutherford and raced by him with Stonerside Stable, Lake Austin was a consecutive winner at Churchill Downs and a winner at Saratoga. He won or placed in six of 13 races and earned $124,373.
