Hollywood Park and Pleasanton stakes winner Bartok’s Blithe at $55,000 topped the first day of the Barretts winter mixed sale Jan. 22 at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif. The first session saw 187 horses sell for
$1,237,100 and average $6,616, with a median of $3,500. The average declined 43% from $11,491 the year before, primarily because the 2007 sale included two large dispersals, one of which, Granja Vista del Rio, sold the broodmare Selvatica for a sale-record $560,000.
"This was very comparable to last year without those dispersals," said Jerry McMahon, president and general manager of Barretts. "We didn’t have any stars, but it felt like there was good activity and it was pretty good for a bread-and-butter sale."
Spring Ridge Farm bought Bartok’s Blithe from the consignment of Havens Bloodstock Agency as agent. The 8-year-old daughter of Bartok out of Merry Krisoke, by Roanoke, is a full sister to Fairplex Park stakes winner Irish Bar and stakes-placed Bewitching Bartok, and she was cataloged in foal to Irish stakes winner Marino Marini.
The averages included $9,261 for 28 yearlings, $7,217 for 70 2-year-olds, $6,242 for 45 broodmares, and $4,357 for 44 horses of racing age. The buy-back rate overall was 25%.
The sale’s second and final session will be held Jan. 23, beginning at 11 a.m.
