Former Magna Entertainment Corp. executive Graham Orr has won a $1.6-million judgment against his former employer in a wrongful dismissal case, according to a published report.
Orr, a former chief financial officer for MEC and an executive with parent company Magna International, was awarded the judgment in the aftermath of an 11-day trial conducted last year in Ontario, the Toronto Star has reported.
The award represents two years of salary, bonus, and other earnings lost when he was dismissed from Magna International in 2003. Orr joined Magna International in 1987 and then moved to Magna Entertainment Corp. in 2000. He rejoined Magna International in 2002.
Madam Justice Gloria Klowak of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled that MEC breached Orr's employment contract when it forced him into a position with Magna International.
Among those that testified at the trial were company founder and chairman Frank Stronach and his daughter Belinda, a former president and chief executive officer of Magna International who now serves as the company's executive vice-chairman.
