BOB AND JOHN

2003 by Seeking the Gold–Minister’s Melody, by Deputy Minister

A grade I-placed juvenile, Bob and John came into his own during the spring of 2006, winning the Sham Stakes (gr. III) and Wood Memorial (gr. I). He came back in 2007 to take a hard-fought victory in the Lone Star Park Handicap (gr. III). All three of his major wins were at distances from one and one-sixteenth miles to one and one-eighth miles, but the balance of his pedigree suggests that he may contribute more speed than stamina to his progeny.

Bob and John is similarly bred to the late Dubai Millennium, as both are by Seeking the Gold out of mares from the Northern Dancer male line. Another Seeking the Gold son bred along somewhat similar lines is Mutakddim, whose second damsire is Northern Dancer. Both Dubai Millennium and Mutakddim enjoyed success with mares returning Northern Dancer, suggesting that this may be a good place to start with Bob and John. Mares returning Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II, Dixieland Band, and Storm Cat (the sire of Bob and John’s stakes-winning half sister Connie Belle) seem to be particularly good possibilities. Given the Northern Dancer strain in Bob and John’s pedigree, returns of Halo would also seem desirable, and Seeking the Gold himself did well with mares returning Bold Ruler (particularly through Secretariat) and Buckpasser.

Seattle Slew has generally not been a favorable cross for sons of Seeking the Gold but has worked well with Seeking the Gold himself. In Bob and John’s case, the most favorable branch of Seattle Slew to try may be that of Capote, who is a three-parts brother (by Seattle Slew–Too Bald) to My Song For You (by the Seattle Slew horse Seattle Song out of Too Bald), the second dam of Bob and John. Given that A.P. Indy has done extremely well with Seeking the Gold mares, the reverse cross of Bob and John to A.P. Indy mares also seems worthy of consideration.

Other pedigree elements that may work well for Bob and John include Roberto, Blushing Groom (Fr), Damascus, Round Table, Icecapade, and possibly Pleasant Colony. —  by Avalyn Hunter
