Apprentice jockey Luis Colon suffered a broken left femur in a spill in the 10th race at Gulfstream Park Jan. 12 and is expected to miss at least four months.

Colon was riding Hidden Point Farm’s Stormtothewire in the six-furlong claiming race when the horse unseated him running down the backstretch.

The 19-year-old native of Puerto Rico underwent surgery that night. Colon's leg was stabilized with a rod and screws .

According to agent Pedro “Peachy” Garcia, Colon came out of the surgery well.

Colon has won 63 races in his career, riding mainly in South Florida after starting his career at Hipodromo Camarero (formerly known as El Comandante) in Puerto Rico.
