Potential Horse of the Year Curlin turned in a slightly faster work at Fair Grounds Jan. 12, going four furlongs in :51.20 six days after he went the same distance in :53.40.
“He’s coming along nicely, I think, just truly a great horse,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. Of the quicker-paced work he remarked, “That’s just where he’s at.”
Regular rider Carmen Rosas was aboard the 4-year-old
Smart Strike colt, winner of the 2007 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), and Breeders’ Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge (gr. I).
Asmussen said no decision has been reached on a potential target for Curlin in 2008. The colt will most likely work again Jan. 18, he said.
