Private School, a stakes winner four of the five years he raced, died Dec. 17 of an aneurysm at age 20 at Elizabeth Alexander's Eutrophia Farm near Chesterland, Ohio.
A Kentucky-bred who raced for breeder/owner Bruce Hutson, Private School (Bates Motel--Never Wood, by Torsion) scored his biggest win in the 1990 Ohio Derby (gr. II). The following year in another big performance, he finished second to subsequent Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair in the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. III) at Churchill Downs.
Another of Private School's highlights was a six-race win streak at Turfway Park. Two of the wins came in stakes. For his career, Private School won seven added-money races and placed in six others.
Trained by Donald Habeeb, Private School retired with 15 wins from 42 races and earnings of $737,762. He stood at several farms before being moved to Eutrophia.
Private School sired stakes winner Coed Ruth E. and six stakes-placed runners. His progeny earnings are $1.9 million. Two of the several mares he covered in 2007 are in foal.
