Irish champion Helmsman, who has sired 20 runners that have won or placed in stakes, will stand at Grant Irvine's Dalacine Stud near North Palmerston in New Zealand, according to racingandsports.com. The 16-year-old son of El Gran Senor will stand for $NZ5,750 (approximately $4,450). He formerly stood at Windfall Farms in California.
Helmsman, a grade I winner in the U.S., has sired seven stakes winners, including Canadian champion Rare Friends and 2007 added-money winner Guiding Hand. He has career progeny earnings of $10.1 million.
Helmsman scored the biggest of his four stakes wins in the 1996 Strub Stakes (gr. I) and placed in such stakes as the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) and Crown Royal Hollywood Derby (gr. IT). He earned a career total of $1,132,142. He is out of the King's Bishop mare Sacred Journey.
