Rogerson Achieves Training Success

Graeme Rogerson became the most successful horse trainer in New Zealand after he notched win number 1,878 in New Zealand when Minno Noir won at Tauherenikau yesterday.

Rogerson's new mark surpassed the previous record of 1877 wins set by the now retired Dave O'Sullivan.

His reaction to the news reflected the inevitable.

"It feels no different," Rogerson said. "But it's great to have it. We have had a great run."

The run started nearly 40 years ago when Rogerson, in his early 20s, trained Morven Queen to win at Rotorua.

"I trained the first horse I ever raced and it won," Rogerson recalled of Morven Queen. "I was 20 or 21."

Rogerson, 60, has won honors as the annual New Zealand trainers' premiership on 12 occasions, and has long operated a trans-Tasmanian operation with stables in Australia. Last November he achieved a career high after training Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

That win completed the big triple in Australia for Rogerson. The other two legs were completed with Polar Success in the 2003 Golden Slipper in Sydney, and Savabeel in the 2004 Cox Plate in Melbourne.
