French Champion Darshaan Euthanized
Irish stallion Darshaan, whose 65 stakes winners included 1993 U.S. Horse of the Year Kotashaan, was euthanized May 21 at an Irish clinic because of a ruptured jejunum, which is part of the intestine. The 20-year-old stallion was bred and raced by the Aga Khan and stood at his Gilltown Stud in Country Kildare. He has been taken to a clinc that morning.Darshaan's major racecourse triumph came in the 1984 Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-I) over Sadler's Wells and Rainbow Quest. He also won a pair of group II events that year and was France's champion 3-year-old. He was retired with five wins from eight starts and earnings of $226,979.Kotashaan, who began his racing career in France, was sent to the U.S. in 1992. His major wins came the following year in five grade I events, including the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT). He also ran second in the Japan Cup (Jpn-I).Darshaan's other stakes winners include Mark of Esteem and Aliysa, both English champions.
