Virginia Kraft Payson’s multiple graded stakes-winning homebred Rutherienne looks to bounce back from a 3 1/2-month layoff, as the Pulpit filly headlines a full field of 12 in the $100,000 Frances A. Genter Stakes (gr. IIIT) Dec. 29 at Calder Race Course. The Genter, to be run at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf, is for 3-year-old fillies. Four also-eligible entries were added.

Rutherienne, along with Hidden Creek Farm’s Street Sounds, are the lone graded stakes winners in the field.

Out of the Rahy mare Ruthian, Rutherienne is clearly the class of the Genter field, having won five of her seven starts this year and seven out of nine races overall. The dark bay filly racked up five consecutive stakes victories earlier in 2007, four of them graded. Rutherienne’s most recent start in the Sept. 8 Garden City Stakes (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, however, was a rough trip that ended in a 10th-place finish. After the race, trainer Christophe Clement immediately saw a problem.

“She was cut up pretty bad on her left hind leg,” Clement said.  “I don’t know how she did it, but she came out of the race lame. We put a splint on the leg and gave her about 40 days off. We were going to bring her back in the spring, but she bounced back so quickly we decided to start her again.

“She has been training great. This is a great distance for her, and she is in good shape.”

A filly that likes to come from off the pace, Rutherienne delivered wins in the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont, Boiling Springs Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park, Lake George Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Saratoga and then earned her first grade I triumph Aug. 18 in the Del Mar Oaks. She has never tried a distance less than a mile.

Rene Douglas will get the mount and break from post eight.

It looked as though Street Sounds was on pace to have the same kind of success as Rutherienne earlier this season, as the Street Cry filly won a pair of stakes to open the campaign. The first one was a neck victory in the April 12 Stonerside Beaumont Stakes (gr. II) on the Keeneland Polytrack in which she showed good early speed. That was followed by a dominating, wire-to-wire 5 1/4-length score in the Hilltop Stakes at Pimlico in May.

But Street Sounds, trained by Michael Matz, is winless in her last five starts and the last two, though in grade I competition, have not been her best. That last one was a ninth-place finish in the Oct. 13 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (gr. IT) on the Keeneland turf. Prior to that she was eighth in the Garden City. A step down in class, the Genter could be a nicer fit for Street Sounds.

Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms and Rod Ferguson, Street Sounds will break from post three with Jose Lezcano aboard.

Early speed in the Genter should also come from Pitamakan, one of two Bill Mott entries. A winner in three of five starts this year, Pitamakan earned her only stakes victory Aug. 19 in the one-mile Hatoof Stakes on the Arlington Park Polytrack, where she set the 1 1/16-mile track record in 1:41.49. Most recently, the Danzig filly led into the stretch in the Oct. 19 Valley View (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland, but tired for third.

Mott’s other starter is Live Oak Plantation’s Sweet Ransom, who has tried stakes competition only once.
