From the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association
The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association is spreading some holiday cheer.
The organization, which represents horsemen at Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park, is giving out 3,000 $25 gift cards redeemable for groceries at Publix and Winn Dixie supermarkets to all backstretch workers at both South Florida tracks. Each licensee who receives a gift card also gets a Florida HBPA T-shirt.
Meanwhile, the Florida HBPA board of directors at its December meeting increased its donation to the Thoroughbred Retirement foundation from $20,000 to $30,000, and its donation to the Groom Elite program from $5,000 to $10,000.
Said Florida HBPA president Sam Gordon: “Although we are funded by one of the lowest percentages of purses in the country, we operate the horsemen’s bookkeeper office here and have been able to put the interest on that account to good use for horsemen at Calder and Gulfstream.”
