The scientific investigation into Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome continued through the weekend as all teams work in their specific areas of expertise. The investigative analysis team, headed by Dr. Thomas Tobin, is requesting samples of mare colostrum from either affected mares or normal mares, collected between April 17 and present. If your farm has stored samples that they are willing to share with the scientific investigating teams, please contact the UK Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at 859/257-3739.
More than 50 scientists and other professional are part of the teams that are investigating the cause of mare reproductive loss syndrome.
Dr. David Powell is coordinating the UK Maxwell H. Gluck Center investigation. Powell is a veterinary epidemiologist and has been involved in investigations of other equine diseases and syndromes, including equine influenza and contagious equine metritis (CEM), in the United States and abroad. He joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1985.
Heading the teams are:
Investigative and Data Analyses--Dr. Thomas Tobin. He is a veterinary pharmacologist/toxicologist who joined the UK faculty in 1975. He is a recognized international leader in the racehorse medication-testing field.
Epidemiological Studies--Dr. Roberta Dwyer. She is a preventative veterinary medicine specialist and associate professor. She joined the UK faculty in 1986.
Farm Inspections and Field Sampling--Dr. Jimmy Henning and Roger Allman. Henning is an Extension Professor of Agronomy specializing in pastures and forages who joined the UK faculty in 1989. Allman is a consulting agronomist and vice president of The Farm Clinic.
UK Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC)--Dr. Lenn Harrison. He is a veterinary pathologist and Director of the LDDC since 1991. Staff at the LDDC includes pathologists, virologists, serologists, bacteriologists, and other professionals.
Finances and Liaison with USDA--Dr. Peter Timoney. He has been Director of the UK Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center since 1990. Timoney is internationally recognized as an expert in equine viral arteritis and other infectious diseases.
Communications--Dr. Carla Craycraft. She has been Director of UK Agricultural Communications Services since 1995. She joined the UK faculty in 1981 as a Beef Cattle Extension Specialist and moved to communications in 1991. She is recognized nationally for her work in the area of distance education.
