Lucky North, a 26-year-old son of Northern Dancer who was pensioned from stallion duty in the summer, died of natural causes at Cam and Sherisse Ziprick's Ziprick Thoroughbreds near Russell, Manitoba, Canada. He was moved to Ziprick for the 2005 season from Franks Farms Southland Division near Ocala, Fla.
Lucky North's 18 stakes winners include graded winners Clearly a Queen, My Luck Runs North, and Zeeruler. In the early part of his 3-year-old son in 1992, My Luck Runs North won the Lexington (gr. II) and Hutcheson (gr. II) Stakes, and ran in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), but finished unplaced.
Lucky North, who was produced from the Olden Times mare Lucky Ole Me, is represented by the earners of $16.3 million. His stakes winners as maternal grandsire include millionaire and grade I winner Lady Tak and additional millionaire Brass in Pocket.
Bred in Maryland by Allaire du Pont, Lucky North won the 1986 Hot Springs Handicap at Oaklawn Park and Phoenix Handicap at Keeneland. He retired with four wins from 20 races and earnings of $117,362 for owner John Franks and trainer Bill Mott. He stood first at The Oaks near Ocala before being moved to Franks Farms.
