The 2004 group II Cherry Hinton Stakes heroine Jewel In The Sand (Ire) (by Bluebird) stood out at yesterday’s penultimate installment of the Tattersalls December Sale in Newmarket when selling for 620,000gns ($1,217,934) to Horseracing Ireland chairman Denis Brosnan.

The five-year-old, for whom agent Johnny McKeever was underbidder, was consigned from Michael Collins’ Lisieux Stud and offered in foal to Galileo.

"Ballette (Ire) (by Giant’s Causeway), who is out of a half-sister to El Gran Senor, was another in foal to Galileo and she will head to Kentucky after selling from John Troy’s draft to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 320,000gns ($628,611).

"She’s for Paul Manganaro, for whom I’ve bought in the past but this is the first mare I’ve got for him in a while," said Gordon-Watson.

Agent Hugo Merry struck early to beat off Lodge Park Stud owner Seamus Burns for Tyranny (GB) (by Machiavellian) who was covered by Dansili (GB) and made 230,000gns ($451,815).

With the better lots seemingly concentrated more on Monday and Tuesday than in past years, yesterday’s figures dropped markedly on 2006, with the gross falling to 7,337,500gns ($14,413,854) from 13,848,000gns ($27,203,142) a year ago. The average price slid to 39,449gns ($77,493) for 186 sold, compared to the 2006 third-session average of 65,943gns ($129,539) from 210 sold.

Overall, the sale is tracking well ahead of last year’s numbers through the third session. Gross sales are up 7.6% to 68,144,000gns ($133,862,723), while the average is up a stout 21.7% to 120,823gns ($237,345).

The December Sale finishes today with another marathon breeding stock session that starts at 9:30 a.m.
