Grade II winner Teuflesberg will enter stud at Hurricane Hall near Lexington for a fee of $10,000. The 3-year-old son of Johannesburg retired with wins or placing in 10 of 21 races and earnings of $621,981.
Teuflesberg scored his big win in this year's Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II) at seven furlongs in 1:21.49 at Belmont. He also played a part in this year's memorable running of the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland, finishing fourth in a four-horse blanket finish in which subsequent Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Street Sense was second.
Also this year, Teuflesberg won the Southwest Stakes and placed in four stakes. At 2, he captured the Sugar Bowl Stakes and ran second in the Sanford Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga.
"Teuflesberg was a very good 2-year-old, is a magnificent specimen, and is from the immediate family of Tale of the Cat, Johannesburg, and Pulpit, while being inbred to that great sire-producing female family through his sire," said Hurricane Hall president Ben P. Walden Jr.
Johannesburg and Teufleberg both share the same fourth dam, State (by Nijinsky II).
Teuflesberg suffered career-ending injuries in both sesamoids in his left foreleg in the Oct. 6 Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland. He underwent surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington and was outfitted with a cast. The cast was removed around Nov. 1, and he was outfitted with another, which was taken off about a week ago. He is undergoing stall rest at Victory Haven Training Center under the care of his trainer, Jamie Sanders, and her fiancé, Donnie Kelly. The two own Teuflesberg with Gary Logsdon and Jeff Singer.
"He should be ready for hand walking in about a week or two," Sanders said about the colt who cost $9,000 as a yearling. "He's really doing well. Looking at him, it's hard to believe he went through this ordeal. He should be ready for test breeding in January."
Sanders and Kelly have each retain a breeding right.
Bred in Kentucky by Richard Giacopelli, Teuflesberg is out of the Devil's Bag mare St. Michele.
