License Fee, with Pat Day in the irons, wins the Gallorette.
By being spotted right, License Fee has amassed earnings of over $1 million. No huge hits, just consistency. She did it again Friday at Pimlico, flying home to win the $100,000 Gallorette Handicap (gr. III) over import Starina.
For the 6-year-old mare by Black Tie Affair -- Star Deputy, by Deputy Minister, is was her 15th win in 41 starts overall. Since being switched to the turf, License Fee has won four of 12 on the grass.
Owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Elliott Walden, License Fee was patiently ridden by Pat Day, who was content to let longshot Crystal Sea set all the early fractions. At the eighth pole in the 1 1/16-mile race, Day set License Fee down for the drive and she shot to the lead, then held off the charge of Starina, who was making her first start in the U.S. Crystal Sea held on for third.
License Fee covered the distance in 1:42 4/5 and paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.60. Starina returned $4.60 and $4 and Crystal Sea was worth $6.20. The fractions were :24 4/5, :49, 1:13, and 1:37.
