Defer won the Laurel Futurity (gr. III) at age two.

Graded stakes winner Defer has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Empire Stud near Hudson, N.Y. The 5-year-old son of Danzig will stand for $6,500.

As a 2-year-old, Defer won at Belmont Park in his debut, and then finished second to Rockport Harbor in the Nashua Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct. In his third start, he won the Laurel Futurity (gr. III).

Defer, who raced as a homebred for Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, later scored at Saratoga and Keeneland and placed in the Tampa Bay and Notoriety Stakes. He won or placed in 13 of 18 races and earned $260,365 while trained by Shug McGaughey.

A half-brother to graded stakes winner Philanthropist, Defer is out the grade II stakes-placed Mr. Prospector mare Hidden Reserve, who is a half-sister to champion Inside Information and a full sister to grade I winner Educated Risk.
