Aqueduct Winter/Spring Numbers Down

Wintertime took its toll on Aqueduct's winter/spring meet, which reported declines in attendance, on-track handle, and average daily total handle.

Total attendance for the 90-day meet that began Jan. 1 and ended May 6 fell 6% to 429,293 and total on-track handle dropping 4% to $131,692,010. Average daily total handle was down 1.5% to $1,463,245, but the total all-sources handle was up 2% to $768,125,565.

"Certainly we were hoping for better results, but they don't seem out of line with what is happening right now in the industry," said Terry Meyocks, New York Racing Association president and chief operating officer. "For the most part, it seems like many of this year's race meets nationwide have shown declines. It was a long winter for us in New York and throughout the Northeast, and we have to contend with the fact that the economy has slowed."

Aqueduct raced 87 days during last year's winter/spring meet. The average daily attendance compared with a year ago dropped 9% to 4,770. Average daily on-track fell 7% to $1,463,245.
