No Time Like Nownownow for Juvenile Turf Surprise
Under a driving rain, the son of Whywhywhy trailed the field of 12 through the first six furlongs, which was paced by front-runner Prussian in pedestrian fractions of :24 1/5, :49 2/5 and 1:15 on a yielding turf course.
But Julien Leparoux swung Nownownow six paths wide coming out of the final turn, and they surged past the leaders from seventh in the lane. Nownownow overtook a similarly charging Achill Island in deep stretch to post a half-length triumph in a final time of 1:40 2/5 for the one-mile distance.
“I moved at the quarter pole and I knew I was going to get it in the stretch," Leparoux said. "The turf is not too deep; it’s just wet.”
Parisel was listed as the official trainer for Nownownow. Biancone was suspended by Kentucky stewards for one year for possession of cobra venom, a prohibited substance and Class A drug under Kentucky's medication rules. The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority reached a settlement Oct. 17 with Biancone barring him from training horses for six months and preventing him from applying for a trainer's license for an additional six months. The suspension begins Nov. 1, but Biancone agreed to withdraw as the trainer of record for the horses he had pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup.
“The weather was an obvious worry, but we knew he had the breeding on both sides to handle the soft going," Parisel said. "Our plan was to relax behind horses and then make one run. It worked out today. He’s a very nice colt. I’m very happy. Mr. Biancone deserves a lot of the credit. This was a team effort.”
The winner, who was bred in Kentucky by owner Fab Oak Stable, paid $27.20, $8.60, and $6, while runner-up Achill Island, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, paid $5.20 and $7.80. Third-place finisher Cannonball, who was another 1 3/4 lengths back with Elvis Trujillo aboard, paid $7.80.
A $2 exacta paid $180, a $1 trifecta $1,318, and a $1 pick-three $3,171.40.
"When I pulled him out, he quickened and I thought I had it," Murtagh said of Achill Island. "These are very tough conditions for a 2-year-old.”
“He ran a stormer," said trainer Aidan O'Brien of the runner-up. "We’re delighted. He came to win his race and just got nabbed on the line.”
Nownownow earned $540,000 for his connections while he improved his record to two wins and three seconds in six starts. He has banked $641,950.
Three-length winner of the With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga in his turf debut Aug. 31, the bay colt was coming off a second-place finish behind Juvenile Turf rival Gio Ponti in Keeneland's Bourbon Stakes on the grass Oct. 7. Nownnownow is out of the Exit to Nowhere mare Here and Now.
Strike the Deal finished fourth, followed by Domestic Fund, Texas Fever, The Leopard, Gio Ponti, Your Round, Prussian, Cherokee Triangle, and Preachin Man.
