Jockeys Injured in Churchill Spill, One Horse Dies

Jockeys James Lopez and Tim Doocy were injured in a spill during the running of Sunday's fourth race at Churchill Downs.

The mishap occurred when Lopez's mount, Machamillion, fell approaching the stretch. Doocy and his mount, Hold Me Together, were trailing just behind the fallen horse and Doocy was unseated while attempting to hurdle Machamillion.

Lopez complained of a sore right shoulder and dizziness and was taken to Caritas Medical Center for X-rays after being examined by the track physician. Doocy suffered soreness in his neck and right thumb and will be X-rayed later.

Machamillion fell after he fractured his left knee, according to track veterinarians. He suffered a fractured skull in the fall died at the scene.

Hold Me Together finished the race without a rider and was returned to his barn.
