Chichicastenango tracked the leaders in third place before launching a bid with two furlongs to run en route to winning the Prix Lupin (Fr-I) by a neck on Sunday at Longchamp.
Anabaa Blue finished second in the 1 5/16-mile race, with Milan third and Amiwain fourth. Atlantis Prince set the pace before fading to finish last of five.
Chichicastenango completed the distance in 2:10.50 on good turf.
"This horse is improving every time he runs, getting tougher and tougher as time goes by," said winning trainer Philip Demercastel. "He loved the trip and the fast ground. At one point I was afraid that his jockey had moved too soon, but Alain Junk knows him well and judged it right."
Prior to the Prix Lupin, Chichicastenango (Smadoun--Smala, by Antheus) had never won a race longer than one-mile. In his lone previous route attempt, the gray colt finished third – beaten by nine lengths – in the Prix Greffulhe (Fr-II) last month on yielding turf at Longchamp. The Prix Lupin marks the second stakes win for Chichicastenango, who won the Prix Thomas Bryan (Fr-III) as a juvenile.
