Red Baron's Farm's Janet tracked pacesetter Alexine then held off a late rally from 9-10 favorite Keemoon to win the $150,000 Yerba Buena Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) by 3/4-lengths Saturday at Bay Meadows. Under David Flores, the Darrell Vienna trainee completed the 1 3/8 miles in 2:17.09 on a firm turf course.
Keemoon finished second, a neck ahead of a resurgent Alexine. Shebane was last in the four-horse field.
Janet returned $8.80 and $2.80. Keemoon paid $2.40 to place. There was no show wagering due to the short field. The $1 exacta paid $8.40.
The win marks the second in a row for Janet, who won an optional claiming race at Santa Anita in her most recent start prior to the Yerba Buena. Her last stakes win came in the restricted Possibly Perfect Stakes at Santa Anita in October. A 4-year-old filly, Janet (Emperor Jones--Bid Dancer, by Spectacular Bid) was bred in England by Fares Stables Ltd. She earned $82,500 for the win, her fifth in 14 starts. (Chart,
