Majestic Roi, who has always been held in high esteem by her trainer, Mick Channon, rewarded his faith when turning in a powerful performance in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (Eng-I) at Newmarket Oct. 6.
The 3-year-old daughter of Street Cry
defeated a quality field of fillies and mares in the Sun Chariot. Speciosa, Simply Perfect, Nannina, and Echelon were all group I winners, and the other contestants were also stakes winners.
As expected, Speciosa, winner of the 2006 Stan James One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I), took the lead at the break and set a strong pace for the first five furlongs of the one-mile contest. The Cheveley Park duo of Nannina and Echelon, along with Simply Perfect, were content to track right behind the leader throughout the early stages.
Darryll Holland kept Majestic Roi toward the rear of the field during the early stages, and the pair then worked their way through the pack as they neared the six-furlong mark. Speciosa suddenly began to hang to the left and gave up the lead to Nannina, who took command with two furlongs left to run.
Majestic Roi was making up plenty of ground on the leaders by this time and blew by Nannina in the final furlong to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length. Nannina held on for second by a length over her stablemate, Echelon.
The final time for the eight furlongs was 1:37.83 over the good to firm turf.
Majestic Roi was bred in Kentucky by Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds and was sold for 25,000 guineas at the 2005 Tattersalls October yearling sale. She is out of the stakes-winning Hero’s Honor mare L’Extra Honor and hails from the female family of the great Fanfreluche.
