Danzon Demolishes Kentucky Cup Distaff Field

Under a patient ride from Julien Leparoux, Joseph Allen’s Danzon demolished a field of 12 when she caught the frontrunners and opened up to a five-length lead in the $175,000 Kentucky Cup Distaff (gr. III) (VIDEO) over the Turfway Park Polytrack Sept. 29.

Coming off a fifth-place finish in the July 28 Diana Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga, the 4-year-old daughter of Royal Academy rated comfortably in the middle of the pack as frontrunners Tufted and Pleasant Hill hooked up to set early fractions of :23 3/5 and :47 1/5. Eyes on Eddy briefly took the lead on the inside going toward the final turn before Delicate Dynamite claimed the front at the head of the stretch. Danzon, however, kicked into gear three wide and blew past the field, finishing under a confident hand ride from Leparoux in 1:43.42 for the 1 1/16-mile event.

“She broke good and, like usual, backed off the pace," said Leparoux, who earlier won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. III) with Michael Stidham trainee Texas Fever. "We were cruising along and I asked her picked up around the turn. She responded and won easily.”

“She’s a nice filly," Biancone said. "She’s been training well and we thought she’d like the Polytrack. She’s a filly that likes soft going and with all the dry weather, we haven’t been able to run her on the turf. We have a lot of options for her. She’s eligible for everything. We’ll look at the EP Taylor and (Breeders’ Cup) Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT)."

“(Delicate Dynamite) ran great," said Frank Bernis, assistant to trainer Tom Amoss. "The other horse was just too much for her. We got a good trip. We were outside as was the winner. No complaints about her trip at all. She’s game and tries hard every single time.”

Danzon returned $6.40, $4.20, and $3. Delicate Dynamite brought $9.60 and $4.40 to place, while Kettleone up returned $3.60 to show. Sweetdownthelane was fourth.

Danzon, a $75,037 purchase from Tattersall’s October yearling sale in 2004, now has a 5-2-3 record from 14 starts. The Kentucky Cup Distaff was her first graded stakes win in North America. She won the Prix Vanteaux-MTPA Office de Tourisme de l'Ile Maurice (FR-IIIT) at Longchamp in 2006.
