Although breaking her maiden last time out after moving up in a disqualification, technically, She’s the Umpire has never finished first in five career starts. Normally sending a 2-year-old filly out in graded stakes competition would be a lot to ask under those circumstances. However, that did not stop trainer Ian Howard from taking a shot in the $175,000 Mazarine Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. III) at Woodbine Sept. 29, a 1 1/16-mile event for juvenile fillies.

“She’s got to improve,” Howard admitted. “(But) we’re encouraged enough by how she’s training to take a shot.

“The blinkers helped her last time. She’s been kind of green. Last time she was more focused. She got smacked in the head by the whip (but) still dug back in.”

A daughter of Smart Strike  -Zurita, She’s the Umpire has the advantage of going 1 mile and 70 yards in her last start. In that Sept. 9 maiden special weight contest, current starter Satin Slippers won by 1 1/4-lengths but was taken down by stewards because of the illegal whipping incident. Those two fillies are the only of the five Mazarine contenders who have gone more than a mile.

A Luis de Hechavarria Florida homebred, She’s the Umpire has placed in three of her five starts. Satin Slippers, by E Dubai  , out of Matilda Dancer, has raced twice at Woodbine. The other start came Aug. 19, a one-length defeat to Born to Be, who also enters the Mazarine.

Born to Be, a daughter of A.P. Indy-Susan Powter, was purchased by Chiefswood Stable for $475,000 at the Keeneland 2006 Yearling sale. She is trained by Eric Coatrieux and was bred in Kentucky by Liberty Road Stables.

Officer Cherrie is the classiest of the Mazarine field, having won twice in three efforts, including the $125,000 Ontario Debutante Stakes Aug. 18 at Woodbine. The Officer filly is owned by Charles Laloggia and is the morning line 8-5 favorite.

Completing the field is Victory Romance, who after losing two maiden tries, won the $60,000 Two Year Old Filly Sales Stakes at Northlands Park Aug. 18.
