English/Irish Classic Winner Tirol Dead in India

Tirol, who won the 1990 group I English and Irish Two Thousand Guineas, died of colic at Capricorn Stud Farm in India, according to the Racing Post. The 20-year-old son of Thatching sired 22 stakes winners.

An Irish-bred, Tirol became only the third colt to win both mile classics. He beat Machiavellian in the English version and Royal Academyin the Irish one.

Tirol raced as far as 1 1/4 miles, in the 1990 Grand Prix de Paris Louis Vuitton (Fri-I), and managed to finish a solid third behind Saumarez and Priolo. He retired that year with five wins from nine races and earnings of $521,159.

Tirol stood at Coolmore Stud in Ireland and shuttled several years to Australia before being sent to India. Four of his Irish-bred offspring earned championships. Miss Tahiti was France's champion 2-year-old filly, and Tarascon was Ireland's champion 2-year-old filly and winner of the Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I). Su Tirolesu and Sopran Taireen were champions in Italy.

One of Tirol's first-crop runners, Opera Prince, landed in India. He won the 1996 Chettinad Cement South India St. Leger (Ind-I).

Following his exportation to India, Tirol sired several stakes winners, including 2006 Poonawalla Mysore Derby (Ind-I) winner Super Speed.
