Richard Carter, Better Known as Tom Ainslie, Dead

Author Richard Carter, who helped racing fans understand the intricacies of betting and handicapping under his pseudonym Tom Ainslie, died Sept. 1 in New York City. He was 89.

Carter, who took the Ainslie name from a brand of whiskey, wrote "Ainslie's Complete Guide to Thoroughbred Racing," "The Compleat Horseplayer," and "Ainslie's Encyclopedia of Thoroughbred Handicapping."

Carter's sporting interests were not restricted to racing. He worked with baseball outfielder Curt Flood on the latter's book, "The Way It Is," which explained baseball's slave-like reserve clause.
