Quijano held off a furious rally by BMW Deutsches Derby (Ger-I) winner Adlerflug to capture the Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-I) at Baden-Baden by a neck Sept. 2.
Adlerflug’s stablemate, Sommertag, went to the front at the start and set sensible fractions throughout the first nine furlongs of the 12-furlong contest. He was followed closely by Axxos, Mountain High, and Adlerflug.
Entering the homestretch, Adlerflug appeared to have the race in the bag, as he easily strode to the lead with just over a furlong left. He was challenged within the final furlong by Quijano, who was under a strong drive by jockey Andrasch Starke. The pair fought to the wire, with Quijano prevailing by a determined neck over Adlerflug.
Egerton got up for third, 3 1/2-lengths farther back. Time for the 12 furlongs was 2:28.19 over the good turf course.
Quijano is a 5-year-old gelding by Acatenango out of Quola, by Unfuwain. His is trained by Peter Schiergen for owner Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof of Germany.
