Baffert Trainee J Be K Breaks Track Record at Saratoga
Zayat Stables' J Be K, a 2-year-old son of Silver Deputy trained by Bob Baffert, broke the track record at Saratoga Race Course in his first career start when he blazed 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.13 Aug. 29, eclipsing Secret Gypsy's track record of 1:03.26 that was set Aug. 16 of this year. "I would've thought he'd break his maiden next time out at Belmont," Baffert said. "I didn't expect him to break the track record. I'm sort of surprised; he did it impressively." Baffert's 2-year-old starters at Saratoga have all been impressive, led by $4.6 million yearling purchase Maimonides, a son of Vindication who broke his maiden Aug. 8 by an effortless 11 1/2-lengths under Rafael Bejarano. Baffert and Bejarano also paired up with the unbeaten filly More Happy, winning the Aug. 15 Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) by 1 3/4-lengths. More Happy is a daughter of Vindication as well. "Maimonides and J Be K are two different types of horses," Baffert said. "J Be K is physically heavier and longer, but he went pretty fast! You learn about them when you run them, so I'll see how he comes out of the race and go from there." Baffert mentioned the Oct. 6 Champagne Stakes (gr. I) as J Be K's possible next start, but said he would consider several options before making a decision. |
