Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Curlin, whose next race could be the Sept. 30 Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) at Belmont Park, worked the fastest five furlongs of the Saratoga work tab Aug. 27.
Curlin went the five furlongs on a fast track in 1:01.65, the fastest of nine works at the distance. On Aug. 20, the son of Smart Strike worked five-eighths of a mile in 1:03.64.
"He's steady and in a very good rhythm," said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. "He did it within himself; he's a very good horse and he gets over the ground well. There's not much more to say except that he's training well en route to the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I)."
Curlin skipped the Aug. 25 Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. He will use the Sept. 30 Jockey Club Gold Cup as a prep for the Oct. 27 Breeders’ Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) at Monmouth Park.
