Out of Control, Becrux Stars of Del Mar Mile Field

Any time a racehorse is able to put, ‘defeated The Tin Man’ on its résumé, it is an impressive item. The Brazilian-bred Out of Control is the only one in the $400,000 Breeders’ Cup Del Mar Mile (gr. IIT) field of nine that can make that distinction, making the 4-year-old colt the one to beat Aug. 19 on the turf.

Also highly regarded in The Mile is Becrux, the field’s only horse to have captured a grade I event. The 5-year-old Italian-bred gelding won the Woodbine Mile (Can-I) in September of last year and most recently took the Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar July 27. Carrying a race-high 121 pounds, he is trained by Neil Drysdale and will be ridden by David Flores.

Out of Control, by Vettori, out of Heavenly Dancer, is trained by Bobby Frankel. After beating five-time graded staked winner The Tin Man in the American Invitational Handicap (gr. IIT) June 30 at Hollywood, Out of Control missed by a length-and-a-half in the Eddie Read Handicap (gr. I), losing to the talented After Market.

Owned by T N T Stud, Out of Control has placed in five of his six career turf starts, winning three of them. Michael Baze will ride.

Also in the field are three other foreign invaders --Captain Kurt, Crossing the Line and Porto Santo. Crossing the Line is a lightly-raced 5-year-old gelding bred in New Zealand. Trained by John Sadler, he has won four of his five career starts, but has never raced in stakes competition. Captain Kurt is also bred in New Zealand and won an allowance at Hollywood in his only start this year. The French-bred Porto Santo is 0-5 this year.

Rounding out the field are Frank the Barber, Isipingo and Zann, who finished a neck behind Becrux in the Wickerr.

The Mile will be run as the seventh race Aug. 19, immediately proceeding the Pacific Classic. The winner will receive a berth in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile later this year.
