Street Sense, winner of the May 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and the July 29 Jim Dandy (gr. II), was back on the main track at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 15 at 7:30 a.m. for another workout.
Carl Nafzger continues to train the James Tafel-owned colt toward a start in the $1-million Travers Stakes (gr. I), presented by the New York Lottery. The 1 1/4-mile “Mid-Summer Derby” for 3-year-olds will be run Aug. 25.
Under regular rider Calvin Borel, Street Sense handled five furlongs in :59.63 seconds. Street Sense went the first quarter in :24 3/5 seconds, three furlongs in :36 2/5 seconds, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12 1/5.
"It was a good, solid work,” Nafzger said. “I have no gripe about it. He went out there and did what Calvin and I wanted him to do. He galloped out well at the end and walked fine back to the barn. He finished the final quarter in :23 4/5 seconds. I thought that was strong.”
Nafgzer said he plans to give Street Sense a final workout, most likely another five furlongs, the week before the Travers.
