Hoist Her Flag, a member of the Canterbury Park Hall of Fame, was euthanized July 30 at Dan and Cindy Mjolsness' Barrington Hills Farm near Barrington, Ill., because of deteriorating effects of melanoma. She was 25.

Bred in North Dakota by Kermit W. Moen, Hoist Her Flag was bought as a weanling by Seven Springs Farm, owned by Mjolsness' parents, Dan and Bev Mjolsness of Minnesota.

Hoist Her Flag dominated Canterbury in the late 1980s in such a way that she was voted the track's horse of the year twice and given the honorary title "Queen of Canterbury." All 11 of her stakes wins--three of which came in the Eden Prairie--and all 10 stakes-placings came at that track. She set a track-record at Canterbury and equaled one there, and also set one at Balmoral Park. She retired with 19 wins from 43 races and earnings of $290,849.

Hoist Her Flag, out of the Beauquillo mare Sue La Con, produced just three foals, but one was stakes winner/stakes producer First Flag.

A race in her honor is held at Canterbury.
