Obviously when you have three track records in the first three races on Kentucky Derby Day, the track superintendent is going to have to answer questions as to why the racing surface is so fast.
The track records for five, 6 1/2, and seven furlongs were all broken Saturday at Churchill Downs.
In a televised interview, Churchill track super Butch Lehr said:
"I think right now we've got it perfect. The weather is perfect and the horses are getting a hold of it good. Certainly, we've got some good horses running here today. I wouldn't say it's totally different, but it is, right now in my opinion at it's best."
Though fast, the track has seemed quite fair, with horses winning from inside and outside, from on the lead and from off the pace. "That's the way it's been yesterday and today," Lehr said.
