Jerry Bailey bided his time, then sent Iftiraas to the front and held off a late-charging Gino's Spirit to win the Citgo Distaff Turf Mile (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs Saturday by a neck.
Iftiraas was beaten just a length last year in the French 1,000 Guineas in a campaign that also included races in England and Ireland.
Sent to this country to Bill Mott, Iftiraas was making just her third start in this country. She finished fifth in an allowance race at Gulfstream Feb. 15, then won an optional claiming event by an easy four lengths.
Owned by Gary Tanaka, Iftiraas is a 4-year-old Distant Relative filly out of the Home Guard mare Ideal Home. The win was her fifth in 14 lifetime outings.
Please Sign In led until the turn for home in the mile grass race, but she had nothing left when they straightened out for home.
Iftiraas ran the mile in 1:36.69 and paid $7.20, $4, and $3. Gino's Spirit returned $3.80 and $2.60, and Solvig paid $3 to show. The exacta returned $23.80.
