Rail Accident Cuts Training Short at Del Mar

Training time was shortened on the Del Mar Polytrack by nearly an hour the  morning of July 26 after a horse working on the track slammed into the safety rail and tore up part of it.

The 3-year-old filly Tizthen slammed into the rail at the eighth pole while working five furlongs on the Polytrack. She sustained cuts, trainer William Currin said.

Jockey Clinton Potts, who was in the irons for the workout, was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas for tests. Potts was taken off his only mount – Richly Endowed in the second race -- because of reported soreness.

The accident required track superintendent Steve Wood’s crew to close the track to training so the rail could be repaired.

The turf course was reopened for training at 9:45 a.m.
