Secret Status won the Kentucky Oaks a year ago. This year on Kentucky Oaks Day, she ran out as the 4-to-5 favorite in the $250,000 Louisville Breeders' Cup (gr. II). The winner in a photo was the Bob Baffert-trained Saudi Poetry over a fast closing Royal Fair.
On Saturday, Baffert will try to win the big prize of the weekend at Churchill Downs when he saddles Point Given and Congaree in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Point Given and Saudi Poetry are both owned by The Thoroughbred Corp. of Prince Ahmed Salman.
Saudi Poetry was 4-1 on the morning line, but paid a handsome $30, $12.20, and $7.80. Another big price was Royal Fair, who returned $12.40 and $7 and combined with the winner for a $361.80 exacta.
Dreams Gallore ran third and was worth $5.60. The trifecta paid $2,316.80 and the superfecta $4,723.90.
Saudi Poetry, a 4-year-old Storm Cat filly out of the Gone West mare Gone to Venus, showed speed from the gate in the 1 1/16-mile race. Also showing early speed was Asher. Secret Status was in a ground-saving rail spot under Pat Day, but never fired.
Saudi Poetry was ridden to victory by Victor Espinoza.
