Honour Colony Wires Lady Canterbury in Upset

Honour Colony, claimed for $62,500 in her most recent start, won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Breeders’ Cup Stakes on Saturday in Shakopee, Minn, in a front-running upset. 

Owned by Scott Goldsher of Highland Park, Ill., and trained by Canterbury Park’s leading trainer, Mac Robertson, Honour Colony scored a 13-1 upset by leading the nine-horse field from gate-to-wire over a firm course. She completed the one-mile turf race in 1:35 4/5.

The $60,000 winner’s share increases Honour Colony’s career earnings to $182,146 from 20 career starts.

In a race seemingly filled with speed, Honour Colony was sent to the uncontested lead under jockey Jesse Garcia.

“I was surprised,” Garcia said. “I think the other riders thought she’d just come back.” That wasn’t the case as the 5-year-old mare drew away easily to win by six lengths.

Honour Colony returned $29.20, $14.20, and $9.60.

On Safari, ridden by Derek Bell, closed for second and returned $19.60 and $7.40. 

Best Mom, with 60-year-old Hall of Fame jockey Earlie Fires aboard, finished third and paid $6.60.
