Zayat Stables’ grade III winner E Z Warrior is to make his next start in the July 29 Bing Crosby Handicap (gr. I) at Del Mar, trainer Bob Baffert said after the chestnut son of Exploit worked a half-mile in :47 1/5 over a fast main track at Santa Anita on Friday morning.
The sophomore colt has been battling a series of minor foot problems this year and hasn’t raced since winning the Jan. 7 San Miguel Stakes, but is expected to be in the gate at Del Mar.
“He’ll be ready for (the Bing Crosby),” Baffert said. “He’s doing really good; he’s grown a lot, and he’s bigger and better.”
The long-term goal for E Z Warrior is the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Monmouth Park on Oct. 27, Baffert said, though a path to the World Thoroughbred Championships hasn’t been mapped out beyond the Bing Crosby.
Bred in Kentucky by Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock, E Z Warrior was a $1.2 million Barretts 2-year-old in training purchase last year and has gone undefeated in three starts since, including the San Miguel in his only race at 3 and last year’s Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes (gr. III).
Overall he’s banked $135,000.
