Could Gold Cup Be On Tap for The Tin Man?
Trainer Richard Mandella says he's toying with the idea of running The Tin Man in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) following the 9-year-old gelding's impressive win in the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) Monday.
However, Mandella said Wednesday that he will probably enter the son of Affirmed in another race on the Gold Cup card June 30.
The multiple grade I winner The Tin Man looked half his age when he returned from an eight-month layoff to take the Shoemaker by three-quarters of a length.
“The Tin Man came back real good,” said Mandella. “I’m tempted to run him in the Hollywood Gold Cup, as well as he has trained on the synthetic here, but most likely will run him in the American (gr. IIT) here and then go back to the Arlington Million (gr. IT) like last year."
The $250,000 American Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on turf is scheduled on the Gold Cup undercard. The Tin Man won both the American and the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million last year to begin his current four-race winning streak.
Trainer Gary Mandella, son of the Hall of Fame trainer, marveled at the work of both the horse and the trainer in the Shoemaker.
“That has to rank right up there with one his greatest accomplishments of horsemanship: winning a grade I with a nine-year-old off an eight-month layoff,” said Mandella, taking his hat off to his father.
Richard Mandella has another horse for the Gold Cup, he hopes. He entered Boboman in Saturday's $250,000 Californian (gr. II) as a steppingstone.
“I breezed him in 34 and change this morning to sharpen him up,” said Mandella of a bullet three-furlong drill in :34 4/5 under exercise rider Jenine Painter.
Boboman won the Hollywood Turf Cup (gr. IT) in December and has finished third in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) and Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) in his last two outings since being transferred to the main track.
“He’s been training real good on the Cushion Track here,” said Mandella of the 6-year-old son of Kingmambo out of the Seattle Slew mare Slewvera.
