Major International Winner Milk It Mick Retired
Milk It Mick, an English champion at 2 and grade I winner at Santa Anita, has been retired from racing because of complications from an injury sustained in 2006. "He fractured a cannon bone last year, and just isn't the same," said Southern California trainer Jim Cassidy, who trained the 6-year-old son of Millkom for Paul Dixon. Bred in Great Britain by Dixon's wife, Yvette, Milk It Mick began racing in the U.S. in 2006. He started out finishing second to The Tin Man in the San Marcos Stakes (gr. IIT), and then won the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (gr. IT), both at Santa Anita. In his next two starts, he ran third in both the Arcadia Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita and the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (gr. IT) at Churchill Downs. In what would be his last race of the year, he ran unplaced in the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park in May. Milk It Mick raced three times this year without placing, with his last start coming in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic. As England's champion 2-year-old male of 2003, Milk It Mick won the Darley Dewhurst (Eng-I) and Somerville Tattersalls (Eng-III) Stakes and placed in three stakes. Milk It Mick, who is out of the Komaite mare Lunar Music, retired with six wins and 10 placings from 28 races and earnings of $671,577. Breeding plans are undecided.
