Tranquility Lake set easy fractions on the Hollywood Park turf course and edged away from Dianehill in the stretch to win the $108,600 Wilshire Handicap (gr. IIIT) in her 2001 debut Sunday. Dianehill came home 1 3/4 lengths back in second, followed by Out of Reach, Louve Mysterieuse, Crazy Ensign, Matiere Grise, and La Frou Frou.

Under Eddie Delahoussaye, Tranquility Lake went a half-mile in :48.70 with Out of Reach a length back, then accelerated to complete the last half-mile in :45.99, stopping the timer in 1:34.69 for the mile on the firm turf course.

"She's been training real good," Delahoussaye said. "It's so much fun riding a good horse. She really was very relaxed the first part of it and when they came at her, she just took off. She's doing everything right and hopefully we'll have another good year with her."

Six-year-old Tranquility Lake completed her 2000 season by finishing second to Tout Charmant in the Matriarch Stakes (gr. IT). Prior to that she finished eighth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT) after earning a one-length victory in the Yellow Ribbon Stakes (gr. IT) in October. Tranquility Lake (Rahy--Winters' Love, by Danzig) is trained by Julio Canani for Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod, for whom she earned $65,160 for her ninth win in 21 starts. She was bred in Kentucky by North Central Bloodstock.

The even-money favorite, Tranquility Lake paid $4, $2.60, and $2.20. Dianehill returned $3.20 and $2.40. Out of Reach was worth $2.80 to show. The $1 exacta paid $5.80. (Chart, Equibase)
