While the focus at Churchill Downs Sunday morning continued to be on the major contenders for the Kentucky Derby, there was more than normal attention devoted to the 3-year-old fillies that will compete in the May 4 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I).
Following Saturday workouts by three Oaks hopefuls, the morning work tab Sunday included five Oaks fillies.
Fastest time among the Oaks contenders was the half-mile work in :48 3/5 for Mysia Jo, trained by Bobby Barnett. Also working that distance was Nasty Storm, timed in :49 3/5 for trainer Dallas Stewart.
Quick Tip, who could provide trainer Neil Howard with his second consecutive Oaks triumph following Secret Status' 2000 win, zipped five furlongs in :59 4/5. The other five-eighths of a mile works were turned in by Real Cozzy, who went in 1:00 3/5 for trainer Dan Peitz, and Flute, the Bobby Frankel trainee timed in 1:00 4/5.
