California Stallion Valid Wager Dead

Valid Wager, sire of grade I winner Valid Video, was euthanized May 15 because of complications from cancer. The 15-year-old son of Valid Appeal stood at Tom and Debi Stull's Tommy Town Thoroughbreds near Santa Ynez, Calif.

A grade II winner, Valid Wager raced as a homebred for Harry T. Mangurian Jr. and stood at Mangurian's Mockingbird Farm near Ocala, Fla., before being moved to Tommy Town for the 2001 breeding season. A graded stakes winner all three years he raced, Valid Wager scored his biggest win in the 1995 Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at seven furlongs over Mr. Greeley. He also won the Westchester Handicap (gr. III) and California Juvenile Stakes (gr. III) and retired with five wins from 16 races and earnings of $306,020.

Valid Wager, who topped the $2-million mark in progeny earnings three consecutive years, sired 14 stakes winners and the earners of $13.5 million. His best runner, Valid Video, proved best at sprint distances, winning the 2003 King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga and the Carry Back Stakes (gr. III) at Calder Race Course.

Valid Wager, who was produced from the Bold Bidder mare Bid Gal, stood for as much as $10,000. He stood this year for $5,000.
